What is Gyaku Waza?
Gyaku-waza is the art of protecting oneself against unprovoked acts of physical violence. The term, Gyaku-waza, literally means reversal-techniques, and describes a group of close-quarter self-defense practices originally developed to be used against being violently seized and held or controlled by an aggressive opponent. Such close-quarter methods contrast the kind of defensive strategies commonly used against distanced-based impact-style attacks such as being kicked, punched or struck by an opponent. Gyaku-waza brings together dozens of time-honoured escape and counter practices into a single study and represents an integral part of the overall curriculum of Koryu Uchinadi.
